Jury Verdict for $3 Million Against Rehab Hospital for Death of 66-Year-Old Patient 2018-03-13T23:36:54+00:00

Project Description

WARREN, OHIO:  After a two week trial, a jury found Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital responsible for causing the death of its 66-year-old-patient.  The jury found that the patient’s family should be compensated a total of $3,000,000.00 for the needless taking of their loved one.

After undergoing a hip replacement, Mr. Williams was transferred to Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital to rehabilitate his hip.  It was expected that Mr. Williams would be sent home after seven to ten days. However, after five days, Mr. Williams was transferred to an Emergency Room where he died several hours later.  An autopsy revealed that Mr. Williams had died as a result of a bowel obstruction caused by fecal impaction.

Expert testimony established that staff at Hillside failed to properly treat and address Mr. Williams’ symptoms and complaints of constipation.  Mr. Williams began acutely deteriorating and no doctor was notified regarding Mr. Williams’ declining condition for over 10 hours. Even after a doctor was notified regarding Mr. Williams’ low blood pressure, the doctor’s orders for fluids were not implemented for over an hour when the doctor called back to inquire as to the patient’s response to fluids.

Attorneys Lee Plakas and Megan Frantz Oldham, of the law firm of Tzangas Plakas Mannos, Ltd. were honored to represent the Williams family in the multi-week trial.
